Alleged custodial death of Arambam Nanao: CJM ordered a judicial inquiry and submit its report within two weeks

Chief judicial magistrate (CJM), Imphal West district, Alek Muivah, on Thursday ordered a judicial inquiry into the alleged custodial death of a goldsmith, Arambam Nanao Singh.
This was followed by a petition filed by Arambam Komberei Devi, mother of the victim, of Sagolband Kangabam Leikai in Imphal West district. Nanao (35) was picked up by the police from near his residence on Monday morning to recover an amount that he owed from another person. He died at RIMS hospital in the presence of the cops in the evening of the day just after he was released. Sub-inspector (SI) Th Jitendra Singh of Imphal police station was suspended. The bereaved mother accused the police of torturing Nanao to death while in custody and prayed for an independent inquiry. The CJM asked the judicial magistrate first class, Imphal West-II, Robert Lhungdim, to conduct the judicial inquiry and submit its report within two weeks.
