HY News Imphal: In a very fateful incident, 35-year-old Arambam Nanao, a resident of Sogolband Kangabam Leikai succumbed to alleged excessive torture by police in their custody on Tuesday.
He reportedly died at RIMS hospital, Imphal where he was evacuated by a police team led by a sub-inspector after he collapsed yesterday afternoon, around 3 pm said his family.
“It is custodial murder of an innocent person,” said a family member.
A police team led by a sub-inspector in civvies picked Nanao from his locality yesterday morning in connection with the recovery of a certain amount indebted to him.
Family members came to know about the incident when a local woman informed them over the phone about the abduction of Nanao by some unidentified persons. Family members were in the dark until a sub-inspector of Imphal police station who identified himself as Th Jitendra informed Nanao’s family over the phone that he was arrested by the police.
Upon inquiry at the police station, family members came to know that Nanao was arrested for a certain borrowed amount.
The family members even requested the police to release him and give them just two days to pay the money. The sub-inspector however turned down the request. A police team led by SI Jitendra himself then brought Nanao to his home and searched the jewelry shop at his house.
The family members offered to pay Rs two lakh but the police officer turned down the offer and tried to leave the house with Nanao. However, Nanao suddenly collapsed, following which the police team took him to the RIMS hospital where he died.
Alleging that it was a custodial death, the family members said there were many injury marks and bruises on his body and that the police officer and the personnel involved in the arrest of Nanoa were responsible for Nanao’s death.
The family members further demanded befitting actions against them.
Meanwhile, locals who formed a joint action committee today decided not to take the dead body deposited at the RIMS morgue and demanded the state authority initiate action against the erring police officer and personnel.
They demanded that the police officer and the personnel involved in the case must be terminated from their services and booked as per the relevant Act,
During a protest staged in the locality today, the locals declared that the last rites of the deceased will not be performed unless their demands were translated into action.
Today morning a mass protestor thronged CM Bungalow to submit a memorandum demanding justice. CM in response immediately took action by suspending SI Jitender. A combined team is in search of the accused SI Jitender said the CM, in an ISTV report. CM further assures that any such illegal activities by those in uniform service will not be tolerated and proper action will be taken up after due process. He also shares his grief with the bereaved family and confirms all forms of support to the family.
